Stephen Nathaniel Kinder, PE, age 64 of Paris, MO passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics in Columbia.

Steve was born March 3, 1952 in Kansas City, KS a son of Roy S. and Anna Mae Livengood Kinder.  He was a 1970 graduate of Paris High School and received a BS Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1976. He married his best friend Hazel Langerud in Paris on May 22, 1977.  She survives at their home.

Steve was an accomplished professional engineer.  He began his professional career with Kansas City Power and Light/Itan Power Plant in the controls department in Weston, MO. He then relocated to J.M. Stuart Station with Dayton Power and Light in Aberdeen, OH.  Later, he was employed with Challenge Consultants where he was employed as cost control manager with Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant near Ottawa, KS; Seabrook Nuclear Plant, Seabrook, NH and later at Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Glen Rose, TX.  Steve also worked globally as an independent contractor for General Electric in project cost controls management and was owner and operator of Project Control Services.

Local projects he assisted with project management include Paris RII School District school additions and the Monroe Manor Physical Therapy Unit.  He also assisted with the Paris Fairgrounds Grandstand Restoration project, designing and construction of the the family’s Light House Theater in Columbia and the Mt. Airy Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.  Steve also conceived, established, designed and donated a children’s handicapped equipment library for the Richie McFarland Children’s Center in Stratham, NH.

Steve attended Mt. Airy Baptist Church near their home and was a member of the Mark Twain Sailing Association.  He enjoyed his family, his friends, the outdoors, hunting, fishing, cruising in his Ford Mustangs, sailing, building and working on their home and farm, enjoying life and brightening the days of others with his sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Kinder of Paris; his mother, Anna Kinder of Moberly; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Frances Langerud of Paris; three brothers, Sam Kinder of Mexico; David Kinder and wife, Tonja of Moberly and Jim Kinder and wife, Angie of Lees Summit, MO; a sister, Beverly Kinder of Kansas City, MO; three sisters-in-law in Hazel’s family including, Debra Hoffman and husband, Richard of Montverde, FL, Cindy Dameron and husband, Jack of Cabot, AR and Judy Langerud of Paris.

He was preceded in death by three sons, David, Paul and Jonathan Kinder; his father, Rev. Roy S. Kinder and a sister-in-law, Patricia Ann Kinder and brother-in-law, Dennis Langerud.

A special tribute from Steve’s family – “This man who was bigger than life has left us but will remain tightly woven into our lives.”

Funeral services honoring Steve’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, 100 N. Main St., Paris, MO with Rev. Dan Campbell and Rev. Diane Chamberlain officiating.  Interment will follow at the Kinder Family Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church Sunday, March 13, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Butterfield Youth Services of Marshall, MO, Mt. Airy Baptist Church of Paris, MO or the Richie McFarland Children’s Center of Stratham, NH.
