James Edward Hickem, Sr.

July 25, 1944 ~ October 6, 2025 (age 81) 81 Years Old

James Hickem, Sr. Obituary

James Edward Hickem Sr., age 81, of Columbia, Missouri, went to be with the Lord on October 6, 2025.  He was born on July 25th, 1944, in Boone County to Elijah and Julia Hickem (Hubbard).

James was united in marriage to Barbara Hickem on January 12th, 1964, and together they shared over 60 years of love and companionship.  He was the proud father of Vanessa Hickem and James Hickem Jr (Tambra).  He took great pride in being grandfather of three grandchildren, Sharice Hickem, Latisha Hickem and James Hickem III.  He was also a beloved great-grandfather of three, Desjamone Turner-Hickem, Ryleigh Hickem and Ty Williams. 

James was preceded in death by his wife - Barbara Hickem, his parents - Elijah Hickem and Julia Hickem, grandchild – James Hickem III,  brothers – Otha Lee Johnson, Nathan Johnson, Curtis Hickem, Pete Hickem, Robert Hickem, and sister – Stella Johnson.

James dedicated more than 40 years to a successful career in Hospitality Management and retired from Columbia College. He was a devoted member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon.

Known for his quiet spirit and love of home, James enjoyed watching the Missouri Tigers play football and cherished every moment spent with his family.

He is survived by his children, Vanessa Hickem and James Hickem Jr., his grandchildren, Sharice Hickem and Latisha Hickem,  great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

James will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
