Gary Taylor Obituary

Gary Edward Taylor, 78, of Columbia Mo., passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, after a prolonged illness. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Memorial Cemetery in Columbia. Visitation will be held at Forum Christian Church in Columbia beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.

Gary was born on October 4, 1945, in Creston, Iowa, to Clifford S. and Lorabel (Cornelison) Taylor of Diagonal, Iowa. Gary grew up on the farm, attending a one-room schoolhouse until sixth grade, and graduating from Diagonal High School. He attended college at Creston Junior College, where he played basketball and baseball, and he graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1969. Gary married his high-school sweetheart, Carolyn Jean Bastow, on September 10, 1966. He served 6 years in the National Guard, and worked as a manager for Sears for over 37 years, retiring in 2007. Gary’s career brought them to stores in Arkansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Springfield, Illinois, where they spent over 30 years until moving to Columbia, Mo, in 2018 to be closer to family. Gary loved sports, classic cars, motorcycles, and every dog he ever met. He especially loved cheering on his kids and grandkids in all their activities, and would well up with pride over their accomplishments. Gary was known for his sense of humor, and all who loved him will dearly miss his laugh and his fun-loving approach to life.

Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Jean; his daughter Shannon (J.K.) Olson; his son Steven (Corie) Taylor; his grandchildren Grace, Liam, Claire, Madison, and Emma; his siblings Janelle (Larry) Dalbey, and Sharla (Owen) McCarron; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Proceeding him in death were his parents and his siblings Jack (Dixie) Taylor and Deanna (Mike) Warin.
