Elizabeth "Liz" Menzel Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth (Liz) May Menzel (nee Kastner) announces her passing, on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at the age of 94. Liz was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert (Babo) and her oldest son, Victor, and will be lovingly remembered by her two surviving sons, Robert (Dodie) of Lake St Louis and John (Cindy) of Manchester, MO.  Liz will also be fondly remembered by her seven grandchildren, Ryan McDonald (Jenni), Jake McDonald, Cari Heintzelman (Mark), Kevin Menzel (Lindsey), Megan Neudecker (Sam), Michael Menzel (Leah) and Drew Menzel; and six great grandchildren, Kya McDonald, Zoey McDonald, Nora Heintzelman, Reese Heintzelman, Aiden McDonald and Nora Neudecker.  Liz was predeceased by her brother Bob Kastner and her two sisters Hilda Campbell and Margaret Davis. She was a beloved aunt, cousin and friend to many.

While living in Hannibal Missouri, Liz was an operator and supervisor for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.  After moving to Columbia Missouri, she worked as an administrative secretary for the University of Missouri School of Medicine.  She retired from the University of Missouri after 18 years of service.  After retirement, she enjoyed working at the polls and collecting ballots from shut-ins who were not able to get to the polling places.  She was a long time member of Campus Lutheran Church and was proud a member of The Optimist Club.

Liz was a sunshine loving, Cardinals cheering, bourbon drinking, absolute spitfire of an angel.  She was an amazing lady, spending her free time knitting scarves for the Boy’s and Girl’s Town of Missouri, as well as for family and friends and friends of friends, supporting her three boys and loving her grandkids and great grandkids! Liz loved antiquing, hunting for mushrooms, playing cards, and she loved to entertain – her door was always open for anyone to stop by for a drink, great food (always including popcorn) and lots of laughs.  She was a strong, independent lady - still driving wherever she needed to go and snowbirding at her condo in Florida in her 90s! While we will miss spending holidays, fun getaways, and random weekend visits with her, she is the strongest version of herself now, dancing with Jesus and reunited with Babo, and Vic.

A Memorial Service for Liz will be held on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 12:00 pm, at the Bach-Yager Funeral Chapel, 1610 N. Garth Ave, Columbia MO, with Rev. Tom Leuther officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 until the start of the service.
